A German man sat down for the most important meal of the day at his home in Stuttgart recently, only to have a dead bat flop out of the box and into his cereal bowl.

The website Metro.UK reports the would-be diner thought at first the mummified mammal was some kind of a Halloween-themed prize, but quickly realized the dead bat was the real McCoy. Calling it a "really unusual case," food safety official Jorg Sturmer is trying to determine how the animal managed to fly into the box of Mini-Zimties cereal and into its bag before it was sealed, which suffocated the bat.
